CT (computed tomography) refers to a computerized x-ray imaging procedure which generates cross-sectional images - or “slices” - of the imaged body part.

These 1 to 10mm thick slices contain more detailed information than conventional x-rays and the computer reconfigures these into a very detailed three-dimensional image.

These images have become very useful for assessment of orthopaedic issues (like fractures, bone abnormalities, arthritis…), tumour staging, vascular assessment (e.g. portosystemic shunts) and different anatomical abnormalities.

Radiographic contrast is often administered, which will add valuable information regarding the nature of the changes seen.
